A Broward Circuit Court Judge Lee Jay Seidman on Thursday morning ordered Timothy Christian Schlafer, 18, held without bond. Schlafer is charged with armed burglary and confining a child under 13 without the consent of a parent.
Police said the 11-year-old girl and her grandmother had never seen or met Schlafer before.
An attorney representing Schlafer told Seidman that the teen is an honor student, has a scholarship to attend Florida Atlantic University and does not have a criminal record.
Schlafer's relatives could not be reached for comment, and no one answered the door at his home in the 8700 block of Northwest 40th Street Thursday afternoon.
A woman who lives nearby told police on Wednesday that she awoke overnight to find someone inside her home who ran outside after she screamed, said Sgt. Joe McHugh, Coral Springs police spokesman.
Police said Schlafer entered the home with the 11-year-old home about 2 a.m. Wednesday, grabbed a large knife from the kitchen and then walked up a flight of stairs to the girl's bedroom. Schlafer picked the girl up from her bed, where she was asleep, and was about to carry her out the front door when the girl's grandmother woke up and began shouting, police said.
Schlafer then put the girl down on the floor, rubbed her stomach and later ran out of the home and to a nearby abandoned golf course, where officers found him moments later, police said.
