Jul 21, 2008 (AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION via COMTEX) -- AMR | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- American Airlines is reportedly planning to cut 1,500 jobs within its maintenance division.

The airline sent memos to employees last week to inform them of the plans, according to The Associated Press.

Fewer maintenance jobs will be needed because the airline is to reduce its aircraft fleet later this year.

American Airlines has about 14,000 employees in its maintenance division, and a spokeswoman for the airline was quoted as saying that the cuts would include some 1,300 mechanics and 200 management and support staff.

American Airlines is planning to cut about 6,800 jobs in total because of record high fuel prices and the economic slowdown.

Most major airlines in the US will reduce their schedules and capacity after the busy summer season this year.
