The FTSE 100 index went down 50.40 points, or 0.94 percent, at 5,311.90 at midday, with financial service company Legal & General Group led the drop by cutting its shares 7.38 percent.
The main gainer, however, was natural gas firm BG Group, whose shares rose 3.37 percent.
