- First City of Art: The Bemidji-First City of Art Studio Cruise, a self-guided tour of studios and venues Oct. 17-19, will allow visitors the chance to witness the creative process, talk to artists about their work and buy artwork directly from the source. Stop for food and refreshment at the kick-off reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 17 at Bemidji Community Art Center. Art cinema

- NDSU Cinema Series The North Dakota State University Art Cinema Series will present "Caravaggio" at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Fargo Theatre. During the late Italian Renaissance, Michelangelo de Caravaggio emerged from Rome's countercultural back-alley life to paint brilliant religious images for the Catholic Church, using as models street thugs, prisoners, prostitutes, neglected children and his own image. Images and sounds from present-day Rome give the films a nervous edge. Tickets: $5. Other films: Nov. 3, "Love is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon." Dec. 1: "The Black Dahlia." About art

- Feminist Art: Nicole Derenne, director of North Valley Arts Council, will present for the Women's Fund Lecture Series, "Feminist Art: A History," at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the Idea Lab, Ina Mae Rude Entrepreneur Center, UND Center for Innovation, Grand Forks. A reception will follow. Admission: Free.

Foreign films

- Monday: "Persepolis," a 2007 film about the life of a young Iranian girl, will be shown at 7 p.m. Monday in UND Memorial Union Lecture Bowl, Grand Forks, as part of the Global Visions Film Series. Admission: Free.

Books

- Book signing and discussion: Author Ann Hood will be at a book discussion and signing from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at UND Barnes & Noble Bookstore: Her books include: "Ornithologist's Guide to Life," "Comfort: A Journey Through Grief," "Somewhere Off the Coast of Maine," " The Knitting Circle."

UND Music

- Wind Ensemble & Band: The UND Wind Ensemble and University Band, conducted by James Popejoy, will present its first concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14 in UND's Chester Fritz Auditorium, Grand Forks: Tickets: $6, $3, $12. Info: (701) 777-2815.

EGF Campbell Library

- Nordic Days: East Grand Forks Campbell Library will host Nordic Days during regular hours Oct. 27-31. A Nordic Festival will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30, at which visitors can enjoy and learn about Nordic culture though music, food, an art exhibit, artist and author residencies and family activities. This activity is supported by Friends of the Campbell Library and made possible by a grant provided by Northwest Regional Arts Council through funding from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Minnesota Legislature.
