Young holds a Master's Degree in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and Bachelor of Arts from Bowdoin College. He is a longstanding member of The American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Urban Land Institute, and the Construction Specifications Institute. Young has been very active in the International Alliance for Interoperability, where he served as chairman of the North American Board of Directors, now the buildingSmart alliance within the National Institute of Building Sciences. He is also a trustee of the National Building Museum, a founding member of the Construction Users Roundtable, vice chairman of the national ACE Mentor program, and former chairman of the American Architectural Foundation Board of Regents. Young has served on committees for the Board of Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment of the National Research Council and on the Board of Overseers of Penn Design, his alma mater. He is also a trustee of Maine Central Institute, his high school alma mater in Pittsfield, Maine. An active speaker, Young addresses national and international audiences at dozens of conferences each year to explain construction economics, interoperability, emerging markets, the impact of green building, and more.
At McGraw-Hill Construction, Young pulls from his experience and credentials to share thought-leadership and market intelligence with owners, design firms, construction firms, and building product manufacturers and distributors. In recognition of the mark that he has made, he received McGraw-Hill's Excellence in Management Award in 2003. Other accolades include the AIA's 2005 Edward C. Kemper Award, the American Society of Civil Engineers Henry L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement of Research in 2007, and election to fellowship from the AIA in 2000 and the Royal Architects Institute of Canada (Honorary Fellow) in 2007.
Prior to joining McGraw-Hill Construction in 1997, Young was president of Bovis Management Systems, where he was instrumental in creating an integrated approach to delivering preconstruction services. Key clients that Young supported through major program management assignments were the Atlantic Summer Olympics-ACOG, NYNEX (now Verizon), Bank of America, and Sun Microsystems. He was also a partner at Toombs Development Company, and he spent 12 years as a practicing architect in Philadelphia.
