"I was pretty much in as soon as I saw the ideas behind it all. It was really fantastic," Liu says during an interview in connection with the theatrical release of the film.
The DVD release of "Kung Fu Panda" hits stores Saturday.
Along with Liu, the computer- generated offering includes the voice talents of Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie and Jackie Chan.
The film, about an unlikely hero, was not the first voice work for Liu. She's done recording sessions for such animated projects as "Game Over," "Maya & Miguel," "Mulan II" and "The Simpsons."
But the actress, who most recently can be seen on the ABC series "Dirty Sexy Money," liked how her recording sessions for the animated movie were vidoetaped to help in the development of the character.
And what a character it is. Viper whips through an assortment of martial arts moves and doesn't even have feet, legs, arms or hands.
"I think they used the video to do the eyes and the mouth," Liu says.
"The character really changed each time I would go in for a reading. In the beginning, Viper was really broad, and everyone was really coming down on Panda a lot. That changed along the way."
The film was released this year. But Liu's recording sessions started five years ago.
The process had taken so long, it took Liu a few moments to recognize her voice when she finally got to see the completed movie.
Liu's a veteran of television and film. She says work on an animated film or TV show is different than anything else she has done.
"You are working on your own. You don't have other actors in the room [during recording sessions]. You are going on trusting what the directors are telling you," Liu says.
"You could be overacting beyond your wildest dreams and find out it needs to be pushed further.
"There is a freedom in that as well. You can do what they want and then do it a couple of ways you want based on what you have learned about the character."
