OAKLAND, Calif., Nov 19, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- CMA | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Comerica Inc. today announced two grants totaling $20,000 to Lincoln Elementary School in Oakland. "This generous gift from Comerica means that many of our children with working parents will be able to have a safe, enriching after-school experience," said John Melvin, principal at Lincoln Elementary School, recognized last year as a California Distinguished School.

A $10,000 grant from the Comerica Foundation and a second $10,000 grant from Comerica Bank, both subsidiaries of Dallas-based Comerica Inc., were to be announced Nov. 19 at a parents' meeting at the school, located at 225 11th Street, in Oakland. The money will be used to fund two after-school enrichment programs. The two school programs are the Oakland's Parks and Recreation Department (PASSPORT), serving first and second graders and OASES (Oakland Asian Students Educational Services), serving third- through fifth graders.

"It is a privilege to be partnering with such a distinguished educational program as the one at Lincoln Elementary," said Danny Yuen, manager of the Comerica Bank banking center in downtown Oakland. The bank opened its Oakland office at 1200 Broadway in August, and is to open another office in San Leandro on Nov. 21. "Comerica Bank is committed to giving back to the communities where we have offices, and I couldn't think of a more deserving program than the after-school programs at Lincoln Elementary, right here in our neighborhood. These students, their parents, and the Lincoln staff are truly an inspiration for us all."

Lincoln Elementary, founded 143 years ago, is located in Oakland's Chinatown, and approximately 90 percent of its 585 students are Chinese-American, said Melvin.

For interviews and feature stories at Lincoln Elementary School, contact the school office at 510-879-1330, and ask for Angela Aquino or John Melvin.
