what the movie soundtrack for my life would be, I'd have absolutely no idea what I could tell them. I'd probably stutter for a couple minutes trying to think of the songs that summed me up better than any other.
When I discovered I couldn't come up with anything, I would probably hand over my iPod and tell them to see for themselves.
With 754 songs currently on my aquamarine-colored iPod, plus a whole slew of CDs laying dormant on my shelves at home, I would have an extremely tough time answering that question, much less anyone trying to make a movie based on my life. (Although I'm not really sure why that would happen. Sitting at my desk, staring at a computer screen and typing wouldn't make for that interesting of a movie, unless they could throw in some CGI dinosaurs or something. Not really sure how dinosaurs fit into copy editing and reporting, but I'm sure someone could figure out a storyline.)
That's why I find it so hilarious that there are Internet surveys on MySpace or Facebook that ask you to shuffle the songs on your iPod, iTunes, Winamp, Media Player or whatever to discover what the soundtrack of your life would be if it were made into a movie.
Here's how it works, once you start shuffling the songs, for each question asked, you type in the song that's playing. Then, to answer the next question, you hit the next button.
So, I did, and here's how it ended up.
Opening credits: "Amber" by 311
Waking up: "Without Me" by Eminem
First day at school: "I'm No Angel" by Dido
Falling in love: "#1 Crush" by Garbage Fight song: "Halcyon + On + On" by Orbital Breaking up: "Let Me Go" by 3 Doors Down Prom: "Glow" by Nelly Furtado Life is good: "Secret" by Madonna Mental breakdown: "Through Glass" by Stone Sour Driving: "Spybreak" by Propellerheads Flashback: "Rubicon" by K.M.F.D.M. Getting back together: "Sorry in Advance" by The Argument Wedding: "Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith Paying the dues: "In the Air Tonight" by Nonpoint The night before the war: "Thriller" by Michael Jackson Final battle: "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance Moment of triumph: "I Am" by Godsmack Death scene: "Flightless Bird, American Mouth" by Iron and Wine
Funeral song: "Wait for You" by Nelly Furtado
End credits: "My Immortal" by Evanescence.
Wow, that's quite a line-up.
I know it's just a game but, come on, "Wait for You" as a funeral song or my fight song being a techno song I probably haven't listened to in at least a year?
What's really funny is that the Aerosmith song supposedly played during my wedding actually was. It was the bridal party's dance.
For some reason, I actually thought that playing this little game might give me some insight into what music really defines me.
And, although it's funny, in the end, the only thing I really noticed is that I've got a bunch of songs I really need to clear off my iPod.
Maybe then I can play again.
