The project's applicants, Provident Investment Properties, want to build a 14,350-square-foot Walgreens drugstore on a 1.48-acre lot on the northeast corner of Eureka Street and Redlands Boulevard. McEwen's Furniture Gallery, which has stood at 200 W. Redlands Blvd. for more than 30 years, would have to be demolished to make way for the pharmacy.
On Oct. 28, the Planning Commission voted to appoint a three-member subcommittee to help redesign a possible downtown Walgreens pharmacy.
Commissioners Paul Foster, Ruth Cook and Gary Miller volunteered to spearhead the subcommittee. The commission approved the action with a unanimous vote.
"The subcommittee will review and advise the City Council on the design elements for the project," planner Tabitha Kevari said.
The project has come before the City Council and the Planning Commission in recent months. Both bodies had misgivings with the project.
On Aug. 12, the Planning Commission denied the project on grounds that it did not adhere to the design guidelines of the downtown specific plan.
On Oct. 21, the City Council heard an appeal by Provident Investment Properties. The City Council voted to have members of the Planning Commission subcommittee, Provident Investment Properties and the city's Community Development
Department work together to bring back a revised design that will help create what Mayor Jon Harrison called a "pedestrian-oriented atmosphere."
The store would include a drive-through pharmacy window. The window was a major concern to the members of the City Council. The window would service 30 to 40 cars per day.
The McEwen's Furniture Gallery building was built in 1974. City directories show that the furniture store was doing business in Redlands as early as 1931.
Carol Hively, a Walgreens corporate spokeswoman, said a lease for the property has been signed. She said the store would open in 2010, if the project is approved.
James Geissinger and J.V. Geissinger Jr. now own McEwen's.
The City Council meets at 3 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 35 Cajon St. The council is scheduled to hold the discussion of the Walgreens project during the 7 p.m. meeting.
