Fausto Robles, who died Friday at 85, went without a vacation for a couple of years so that he could take his family on a grand tour of the United States.
"He loved traveling," said Edgardo Robles, 66. "We stopped at all the national parks."
Somewhere in a box nobody has looked in for a long time are the Kodak home movies Fausto shot on that vacation of all vacations. Bullfights in Mexico. Disneyland. Taking Edgardo to see Orlando Cepeda play for the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park. Standing on the edge of Niagara Falls. Later, there would be trips with his wife, Ramonita, to England, France, Spain, Germany and Switzerland.
The desire to travel, to see the places other people came from, may have been the byproduct of Fausto Robles' 39 years with the U.S. Customs Service in Puerto Rico. Watching all those people arriving and leaving through the international airport in San Juan may have planted in Fausto the need to visit faraway places himself.
Or it might have been growing in a small town in Puerto Rico or serving 13 years with the military that gave him the urge to see how big the world really is.
The only thing Fausto Robles enjoyed more than travel was family. Fausto and Ramonita had two children, but they gave him 10 grandchildren, who gave him 19 great-grandchildren, who just before his death from cancer, gave him his first great-great-grandchild. To all of them, he was the patriarch of love, caring and commitment.
"When any one of us needed something -- emotional counseling, help in making decisions, or material things -- we knew we could go to him," Edgardo said. "He was there for us at all times."
It was family that drew Fausto Robles to Florida about 25 years ago -- following his son to Orlando. It was family that surrounded him in the bedroom of his daughter's home in Orlando when he died -- leaving this earth for one last trip.
Robles is also survived by his sister Julita Ramirez, of Tampa.
