First, many of you might not be aware, but your league officers should all have in their possession a copy of the 2008-09 Playing Rules. Your league secretary was given a copy at the beginning of the season.
It is also important to note that even though these USBC Playing Rules are listed, when you conduct your league meeting before you start your first day of league play, you can, at that time, change any of the USBC Playing Rules to rules that pertain to your league if it is approved by the majority of league members present at the league meeting.
At this time we are just going to highlight three new rules that have recently been added.
Rule 111e: Prebowl and Postponement.
Did you know that when a team prebowls, besides that team notifying its opposing team that they are going to prebowl and when they plan to do so, the week of their prebowl the scores are to be included as part of their new average? This is new since it always used to be that when a team prebowled, their scores were not inputted until the week that the prebowl was bowled for. With the new rule stating that the scores are to be included the week of the team's prebowl, that means the opponents will be able to see what score the team bowled. Now if you/your league does not approve of this, you can add this rule into your league's rules. You could add something like the team that prebowls cannot turn its recap sheets in until 3-6 days prior to the date the scores were supposed to have been bowled.
Rule 5: Fouls
Did you know that if an object such as a pen, jewelry, cell phone or coins should fall out of your pocket and go across the foul line while you are bowling that is NOT a foul? Besides the fact that a bowling ball cannot commit a foul, these objects also cannot be considered a foul. Only a person's body can commit a foul.
Rule 109c: Tardy Players
Did you know that a tardy player can enter any frame and start from that point and join in the game? A lot of us have grown up with the rule being that if you were not present and ready to bowl by the third frame you were out of luck. Now a player can walk in at, say, the fifth frame and their absent score will be used for frames one through five and then they can start bowling in the sixth frame and finish out the game!
Again, we just wanted to make you aware of these rules since not everyone has a copy of the rule book. And, remember, you can make changes to these specific rules for your league if you decide to when you have your league meetings. Even more reason why you should make every effort to attend your league meeting!
