Jan 06, 2009 (Fort Mill Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- SHW | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- A Lancaster County Council featuring several new faces gave a preliminary nod toward rezoning land on Doby's Bridge Road at its first meeting of the new year Monday night.

Ellen Gwyn, who owns the land -- a two-acre parcel -- asked the council to change the zoning from residential to a classification that allows office and retail uses ranging from restaurants to hotels, bars and taverns. The property is directly across the street from Indian Land Elementary School and next door to the Gate Petroleum station and a Sherwin-Williams paint store.

The property's proximity to the gas station and other retail properties makes it difficult to sell for residential use, according to Gwyn's application for rezoning.

The county planning department agreed that the property was better suited for commercial development and approved the rezoning. The planning commission and council agreed.

Indian Land's newly elected representative on the council, Larry McCullough, made his first comments on behalf of his district. McCullough and former Indian Land representative Bryan Vaughn walked the property together, McCullough said, and agreed that it should be rezoned to allow commercial development.

"With what is there today, [the property] is landlocked from a residential perspective," McCullough said .

A first reading of the rezoning ordinance was approved unanimously. No plans have been made for the property yet, but the owners are attempting to sell it.

McCullough was not the only new face on the county council Monday night. Cotton Cole and Kathy Sistare took their seats on the council, replacing Wesley Grier and Wayne Kersey, respectively.

The council elected incumbent Fred Thomas to serve as chairman and Rudy Carter, the former council chairman, was elected vice chairman. Councilman Larry Honeycutt was elected to the secretary's position on the council.
