The Toyota City, Japan-based company's sales dropped to 211,533 vehicles from 233,471 sold last August. Toyota LT truck sales decreased 16.4% to 81,911 units from 97,964 units previous year. Total Toyota car sales fell 4.3% to 129,622 units from 135,507 units a year-ago.
The Toyota Division's August sales were 182,252 units, a drop from 201,272 units sold last year. Toyota Division passenger cars recorded August sales of 111,778 units, down 3.4% from last year. Camry and Camry Hybrid, which led the passenger car sales, posted combined sales of 44,064 units, up 3.3% over August 2007.
Corolla recorded sales of 29,443 units for the month, down 3.4% from last August. With limited availability, the Prius mid-size gas-electric hybrid posted August sales of 13,463 units, a decline of 4.2% from last year. Yaris reported sales of 9,474 units for the month, up 20.5% over the year-ago month.
Toyota Division light trucks posted August sales of 70,474 units, down 17.6% from August 2007, led by the Tundra full-size pickup with August sales of 17,401 units, down 8% from last August. Scion posted August sales of 11,867 units, down from 14,583 units reported last year.
The Lexus Division sold 29,281 units, compared to 32,199 units sold last August. Lexus passenger cars reported August sales of 17,844 units, a decrease of 9.8% from August 2007. Passenger-car sales were led by the ES entry luxury sedan with August sales of 7,881 units, down 8.8% from last year. Lexus Division light trucks recorded August sales of 11,437 units, down 7.8% from the year-ago month. Lexus sales were led by the RX luxury utility vehicle, which posted combined August sales of 8,969 units. The RX 400h hybrid luxury utility vehicle reported August sales of 1,277 units, up 9% over August 2007. The LX 570 reported sales of 748 units, an increase of 238.5% over the same period last year.
TMS posted August sales of 19,529 hybrid vehicles. Toyota Division recorded sales of 18,146 hybrids for August 2008. Lexus Division reported August sales of 1,383 hybrids.
There were 27 selling days in August 2008 and August 2007.
Year-to-date, the company's sales dropped 8.3% to 1,649,043 units from 1,788,603 units. Toyota division sales dropped 7.3% to 1,460,869, while Lexus division sales declined 14.7% to 188,174 units. TMS calendar-year-to-date hybrid sales totaled 185,051 units.
Among others in the industry, General Motors Corp. (GM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), the world's largest automaker, said total vehicle sales for August dropped 20.4% to 308,817 units from 388,168 units in the prior year period.
Earlier in the day, Ford Motor Co. (F | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) said its U.S. sales for August dropped 26.6% to 155,690 units from 212,120 units sold in the same month last year.
TM is currently trading at $89.93, up $1.10 or 1.24%, on 529,438 shares. For the past year, the stock trended in the range of $82.08-$119.00.
