(RTTNews) - President Barack Obama is planning to take to the road next week, leaving Washington to promote his economic recovery and reinvestment plan to the American people.

Obama plans stops in the economically hard-hit towns of Elkhart, Ind., and Ft. Meyers, Fla., early next week, along with his first post-inauguration press conference, scheduled for prime-time viewing at 8 p.m. Monday.

"This is another chance for the president to talk directly to the American people about what he thinks is at stake," said White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, announcing the trips. "We're watching millions of people lose their jobs."

Gibbs added that Obama planned to stress that the bill now before Congress would "save or create millions more jobs," and provide aid to states "so they don't have to lay off firefighters or teachers or police officers."

The trips are also to stress the urgency of quick movement on the proposal. Although it may pass the Senate as early as Friday will still require negotiations between lawmakers and the administration, Gibbs said. The final bill will have to pass both houses of Congress again before it could be sent to the president's desk.
