Back in late February, "Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience" was launched in theaters in 3-D, bringing in a respectable $12 million over its opening weekend. However, following in the footsteps of the enormously successful movie-concert "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour," which pulled in more than $30 million with an astonishing $31,000 per venue opening weekend, "Jonas Brothers" paled in comparison. "Hannah Montana" went on to earn $65 million domestically compared with the $19 million domestic intake of "Jonas Brothers." Getting out of the 3-D format and into the home market could work considerably better than theatrical distribution.
The forgettable action movie "Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li' also hits stores this weekend after bringing in just $12 million in total box office revenue and being universally slammed by critics. Following up on the success of the original "Street Fighter," which earned nearly $100 million on a production budget of only $35 million, "Chun-Li" did poorly enough for it to be highly unlikely that a third installment will ever hit theaters.
The Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow starring romantic drama "Two Lovers" will be hitting stores as well, following a very meager theatrical release. "Two Lovers" was in theaters for quite a while following its February release but was never screened at more than 148 total venues.
Following the tremendous success of "Walk the Line," Phoenix' releases have fizzled at the box office, with the last two both receiving a release of less than 1,500 theaters. While Phoenix has no new acting projects lined up, Gwyneth Paltrow will be back as Pepper Pots in the expected 2010 blockbuster "Iron Man 2," which is currently filming.
Additionally, director Spike Lee's breakout film "Do The Right Thing" will hit special edition Blu-Ray as will David Fincher's "Seven." Critics hailed "Do The Right Thing" when it was released back in 1989, and it was a commercial hit as well, launching Lee's subsequent career as a prominent independent filmmaker and celebrity.
Dark drama "Seven" also brought director David Fincher his first bit of commercial success and teamed him with actor Brad Pitt, who would be in his later films "Fight Club" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." 1995 release "Seven" went on to gross $100 million domestically, which was in the top ten for the year, and has become somewhat of a cult classic, much like Fincher's 1998 release "Fight Club."
Next week, thrillers "Knowing" and "Push" lead the list of new releases to reach the home market.
