Serena Williams Wins Third Wimbledon Ladies' Crown

(RTTNews) - For the second year in a row, the ladies' finals at Wimbledon had all the intensity of an exhibition match, as Serena Williams thumped sister Venus Williams 7-6, 6-2 for her third singles title at the All England Club.

For Serena, it was her first singles title at Wimbledon in six years, revenging last year's finals defeat at the hands of her older sister.

With the novelty of an all-Williams final having long worn off, Saturday's sister act lacked any of the intrigue characteristic of a thrilling fortnight at Wimbledon.

The two looked almost embarrassed to win points, not wanting to upstage the other sister.

Eventually, Serena's service game won out, forcing Venus into a number of key unforced errors at crucial stages of the match.

The crowd at centre court, still stung by yesterday's rout of Britain's Andy Murray at the hands of American Andy Roddick, were politely appreciative of the Williams sisters, but failed to generate much atmosphere beyond a few oohs and aahs.

Venus, the more dominant of the two through the rounds leading up to the final, looked tentative for most of the match. Only her second serve kept her competitive in the second set as she missed eight consecutive first serves at one point.

The first break in the match was converted successfully by Serena in the second set as lifeless Venus double-faulted to give her sister a stranglehold on the match.

It was academic from that point, as Serena held her serve once before breaking her sister's serve for second time to win the crown.

"Today Serena was too good. She played the best tennis today," said a smiling Venus following the match.

"I can't believe I'm holding the trophy and Venus isn't," Serena beamed.

The sisters are teammates for Saturday's ladies' doubles final, where they will attempt to defend their title versus Australia's Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs.

The men will take Centre Court on Sunday, as Roger Federer attempts to break his tie with Pete Sampras by winning a 15th grand slam title. It will be Federer's seventh straight Wimbledon final and 20th Grand Slam finals appearance.

With his serve clicking, Roddick will be paying his third Wimbledon final, having lost in 2004 and 2005 to Federer.
