Verizon has been working to provide broadband to 24 Western Massachusetts communities that never had it before. So far, on average, about 70 percent of developed areas in Blandford, Becket, Colrain, Cummington, Florida, Goshen, Middlefield, Monroe, Montgomery, New Marlborough, Plainfield, Rowe, Sandisfield, Tolland, Washington and Worthington have been hooked up.
"In all these communities, the response has been absolutely terrific," said Phil Santoro, a spokesman for Verizon.
"We've been getting a lot of positive feedback, not only from people who purchase the service, but from people in the area who say it's about time they got broadband in their region. People signing up in the communities where we've already introduced it has exceeded our expectations."
Hancock and New Ashford are the latest communities to receive the service.
Next in line are Heath, Leverett, Leyden, Pelham, Westhampton, Windsor and an expansion of the service in Shutesbury.
In August, Gov. Deval L. Patrick signed legislation to fund $40 million worth of infrastructure improvements within three years to encourage providers to expand high-speed Internet access in the state's 32 underserved communities. Patrick said the effort will create substantial opportunities
for economic, academic and cultural growth.
According to Santoro, it is too early to know which companies will sign on to be a part of Patrick's plan.
He said that the current Verizon effort to connect communities in Western Massachusetts is fully funded by Verizon, to the tune of about $200 million, and is unconnected to the Patrick plan.
"No state money has been spent in our endeavor," Santoro said.
Verizon's High Speed Internet service gives Internet users data transfer speeds of 768 kbps (kilobytes per second), 21 times faster than dial-up.
Donna C. Cupelo, Verizon region president for Massachusetts and Rhode Island, said in a written statement that Verizon's investments in Massachusetts have been and will continue to be a contribution to growing the state's economy.
Verizon will notify potential customers of the availability of the service by mail, media advertising and will contact local officials in each community.
