Steve Lachendro of Butler, Penn., was killed in Friday's crash, which left pilot Keith Sproul critically injured. Sproul f lew the "Wings of Wind," balloon, an inverted pyramid shape that was registered in New Jersey.
Winds were beginning to gust Friday morning when the balloon crashed into the power lines and its gondola caught on fire. Fire officials recovered both men in an arroyo beneath the crash site, and Sproul was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital. The balloon envelope separated from the gondola and was found on San Felipe Pueblo.
Friday's crash was Balloon Fiesta's second fatal accident in two years, an unusual streak for an event with a long record of safety. Last year, 60-year-old Rosemary Wooley Phillips of Oceanside, Calif., died when she fell from a balloon that became caught on a static line that protects power equipment.
Fiesta spokeswoman Kathie Leyendecker said that it is odd to see fatal crashes two years in a row, but she sees them as unrelated freak incidents, not part of a trend. Leyendecker also defended festival officials' decision to allow Friday's special shape rodeo to begin despite winds that were a factor in the crash.
"It's unusual and sad that it did happen two years in a row, but the conditions on the field were excellent at the time of launch and the wind changes often," Leyendecker said. "There obviously was something happening in that area for the crash to happen."
Leyendecker said a Wells Fargo fund has been started to benefit Lachendro's and Sproul's families, and the hotels where they are staying have made their rooms free for as long as they need them.
How to help:
A fund has been established to benefit the families of Steve Lachendro and Keith Sproul. To donate, go to any local Wells Fargo and ask to donate to the account, which is under the name Debbie Sproul.
