Banfield will close its doors on Nov. 1

Oct 25, 2008 (Aiken Standard - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- PETM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Banfield, The Pet Hospital inside Aiken's PetSmart is closing its doors, but Pet-Smart is not.

The last day of business for the veterinary service will be Saturday, Nov. 1. The location opened in early February 2007.

Banfield spokeswoman Kathy Baumgardner said the decision to close was "difficult" but one the company thought was best since the Aiken Exchange shopping center is in a state of "flux" right now.

"We value our clients and pet patients and apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause," she said. "Our foremost concern is to connect our clients with high-quality veterinary care. We are in the process of notifying our clients and providing them with referrals to high-quality veterinary care in the surrounding area. This may include non-Banfield hospitals that are closer to our Aiken clients."

Clients have the option of transferring their pet's care to the closest Banfield hospitals, which are in Columbia.

Banfield, The Pet Hospital was founded in 1955 and can be found in more than 650 PetSmarts around the country. Banfield offers optimum wellness plans, which provide different levels of health care to prevent illness and prolong the life of pets. According to its website, the plan is designed to save the customer 50 percent on the routine medical needs of the pet.

To obtain medical records or radiographs, call Central Team Support at (800) 838-6738, ext. 7743. They will be able to give you a copy of the pet's vaccine or medical records. Radiographs will be transferred to a new veterinary office per the request of the client.

Clients with Banfield Optimum Wellness Plan will have their plans canceled. If clients have additional questions, call Banfield's Wellness Plan Financial Services team at (800) 838-6738, ext. 5394.
