Nov 09, 2008 (The Register-Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- WMT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- There has never been a better time to visit the new DJ's Sports Shop on Robert C. Byrd Drive, near the MacArthur Wal-Mart.

After some renovations, the store looks fresh and includes more sports apparel, collectibles and memorabilia for all ages.

"We have so much, I don't know where to begin," said Derrick Hypes, who owns the new sports shop with his wife, Joanna. "We have more West Virginia University sports items than anyone around and basically have all the college and professional teams. We even have some stuff for the high schools and little leagues. There's no place like this around this area."

The couple is from Mullens and has owned Fox's Pizza in Sophia the past three years.

"We offer the largest pizza in West Virginia," Hypes said.

The new sports shop has been open about four weeks, Hypes added.

"This place used to be a primitive shop called The Indoor Porch," Joanna Hypes said. "Downstairs used to be a tattoo shop."

From the outside, DJ's looks as trendy as any of the high-end clothing apparel stores lined throughout the mall, but don't worry, its prices are highly competitive.

"Check out our prices against other sports shops in the area and I think you'll see that we have some great prices here," Joanna said.

One of the most impressive features of the new store are the sports flags that are near the entrance, but at the same time catch any passerby's attention.

"We are located between Sissy's Video and Wal-Mart, but you can't miss the sports flags," Derrick said.

Upon entering the store, customers' eyes might initially gravitate to the stunning amount of sports items available.

"We look small on the outside, but once inside you see we have so many items," said Derrick. "We have so many different items for so many different ages that draws you throughout the entire store, so you'll be swayed to look at everything."

From jerseys to shirts to golf bags and sports lamps, consumers won't have to look far to find any type of sports apparel for any age.

"Most people tell us they can't find sports apparel for babies or youth, but we have it all for all ages," Derrick said.

The store has done a marvelous job of making items easily accessible. From the openness of the layout to everything organized by sections, fans can find and buy what they need in a matter of minutes and be on their way.

"We are hoping to expand one day and have even more to offer," said Derrick.

The new store has a simple, but clean design.

"You don't need to be a rocket scientist to navigate through the store," Derrick says. "We tried to put items near each other that would go together."

Derrick and Joanna urge everyone to come on down to the store to be the first to sport two of the newest WVU items on the market.

There is plenty of apparel and collectibles for children and adults like, he added.

The couple has three children, Andrea, 12; Derrick II, 4; and Alli Jo is 2.

"It's tough to juggle the businesses and family life, but we have very supportive families that help us," Joanna said.

After leaving the store, customers will feel like they've completed a sports apparel journey rather than a simple shopping spree.

"Any WVU, NASCAR or sports fan should come to see all the new and exciting products and collectibles," said Derrick. "DJ's Sports Shop is the best place to shop for WVU fans or sports fans, old and young."
