It has been 27 months in the making, but Kansas Wesleyan's new Mabee Arena is, at long last, open for business.
The Coyotes' dazzling, state-of-the-art gymnasium will be unveiled Saturday night when the men's basketball team plays Johnson & Wales (Colo.) at 7 p.m.
Construction-related delays moved occupancy back more than two months, but school officials finally got the green light Wednesday afternoon.
The facility features approximately 1,500 chair-back seats, a maple wood floor, two state of the art Daktronics scoreboards, new sound system, six new retractable basketball goals, a retractable performance volleyball net system and a giant, 24-foot purple Coyote logo at center court.
Mabee Arena is part of Wesleyan's $12 million Student Activities Center that opened in September and was formally unveiled last month during homecoming activities. The arena is named in honor of the Mabee Foundation of Tulsa, Okla., which made a sizable donation to the project.
While no formal dedication is planned, athletic director Matt Williams said Wednesday the first 700 fans will receive a commemorative ticket.
Spectators are asked to enter on the east side, through the old Muir Gymnasium entrance, or at the main entrance of the Student Activities Center on the west side of the building, which is adjacent to the main parking lot.
Wesleyan's two basketball teams conducted their inaugural practices in their new digs Wednesday afternoon.
"I'm so excited about it and I know my team is really excited," women's coach Gordon Reimer said. "This is a great time for my team and our college."
Reimer said his players have been eager to get into the new facility. The KWU women's team will play its first game in Mabee Arena at 6 p.m. Nov. 22, against Benedictine.
"My team has been talking about it since the first day of school in August, and every day since then," he said. "They're like a kid at Christmas with presents under the tree."
Men's coach Mike Davert agrees.
"It's a great feeling and I know the kids are excited. So is the entire student body and the administration. It's great news," he said.
Davert said the delays were frustrating, but understands why.
"We've been waiting for a while, but had to make sure things were done correctly," he said. "It's hard to wait, but you want it done right. We realized we had no control over it.
"The guys just focused on trying to get better and were hoping we'd get in before the first home game. I think they understand things had to be taken care of first."
Davert said he isn't too concerned about his players being affected by the "wow" factor on Saturday.
"There's no added pressure. We're playing a Johnson & Wales team that's much improved over the last four or five years," he said.
"The first couple of minutes we might see them taking it all in and not be as sharp as we want to be. We might make some early mistakes, but I think we'll settle in and be fine."
Wesleyan previously played its basketball and volleyball games in Muir Gym, a 1,000-seat facility that opened in 1981 and is adjacent to Mabee Arena. Muir remains intact and will be used as an auxiliary gym, primarily for practice purposes.
