The LT1001j laptop will have an 8.9-inch screen and a 160-gigabyte hard-disk drive. It will be powered by Intel Corp.'s power-saving Atom processor and run Microsoft Corp.'s Windows XP operating system. It will come with 1GB of memory and be able to run on battery power for three hours. Among its selling points will be a weight of just 1.06kg.
Carrying a suggested retail price of less than 50,000 yen (US$538.80), the new machine will be cheaper than competing products with comparable specifications. It will be sold through K's Holdings Corp. (TSE:8282) and Joshin Denki Co. (TSE:8173).
Gateway was acquired last year by Taiwan's Acer Inc. TAIEX:2353), which already sells inexpensive PCs in Japan under its own brand name. By introducing the Gateway brand in parallel to this, the companies aim to meet the needs of a wide range of customers.
