Stocks were enjoying their third consecutive up day in both the S&P 500 and Dow industrials as of midday on Thursday. Financial shares were again among the most impressive stocks to the upside, with Wachovia Corporation (WB | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) up more than 8% and both American International Group (AIG | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and Washington Mutual (WM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) gaining more than 5% by midday on the day.

Among the biggest midday movers on the day are Cell Genesys Inc. (CEGE | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), which is up for the second day in a row after a massive gap down at the open yesterday, and MBIA Inc. (MBI | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), up more than 20% at midday and looking likely to close above its 200-day moving average for the first time since October 2007.
