Stocks were rallying from intraday lows as of midday on Thursday with traders particularly aggressive in buying shares in technology-related stocks. Both energy stocks, which had opened higher, and financial stocks were pulling back.
Intel (INTC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), SanDisk (SNDK | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) were all up more than 5%, representing the continued strength in the technology sector. Retailer JC Penny (JCP | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) was also up significantly after the first half of trading, gaining more than 7%. To the downside, American International Group (AIG | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) reported continued losses and refused to rule out having to raise additional capital. The shares were down by more than 17% as of midday on Thursday.
Among Thursday's biggest movers were Noble International (NOBL | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and Pomeroy Computer Resources (PMRY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) both of which impressed traders with better than expected earnings announcements.
