  • Apple (AAPL | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) shares fell dramatically intraday on rumors that the health of CEO Steve Jobs was worse than expected and deteriorating. Apple would not confirm the rumors, which were based on a report from a technology blog.

  • Shares of General Motors (GM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and Ford Motor Company (F | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) were higher on Tuesday on news that GMAC, the financing unit for General Motors, would receive public assistance.

  • Also higher on Tuesday were shares of Rohm & Haas (ROH | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating). Traders and investors are betting that Dow Chemical (DOW | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) will be forced to follow-through with a planned acquisition of the company, despite losing funding from Kuwait.

  • General Electric (GE | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) CEO Jeffrey Immelt pledged that the conglomerate would fight to maintain a AAA credit rating as the cost of a downgrade has soared in recent months.

  • Among the few bright spots in the retail sector was news from Staples (SPLS | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) that the office supplies retailer had a "strong cash position" and was reducing the amount of its line of credit.
