Today's PowerRatings article will focus on highly rated stocks from the S&P 500. The S&P 500 index is used as a gauge of the U.S. economy, as it is composed of the 500 largest U.S. stocks.  S&P's website states that, "this world-renowned index includes a representative sample of 500 leading companies in leading industries of the U.S. economy. Although the S&P 500 focuses on the large-cap segment of the market, with over 80% coverage of U.S. equities, it is also an ideal proxy for the total market."

Currently the S&P index is trading within a trading range from 1360-1390 areas and may move higher towards year end.
