Stocks ended the week mixed as upside earnings surprises from some companies competed for attention with earnings disappointments from others.

The Dow closed up 49.91. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day down by 29.52. And the S&P 500 was virtually unchanged in being up 0.36.

Bank of America (BAC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) reports earnings Monday before the markets open. Analysts are expecting EPS of $0.53.

Republic Services (RSG | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) announced that it was not interested in the unsolicited bid from Waste Management Inc. (WMI | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and would instead to continue to pursue Allied Waste Industries (AW | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating).

Reporting earnings before the bell on Monday, Merck (MRK | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) is expected to announced per share earnings of $0.83.

A smaller than expected loss in its earnings report on Friday helped boost shares of Citigroup (C | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) by more than 9% late in trading on Friday.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (TEVA | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) announced that it was buying Barr Pharmaceuticals for $7.46 billion.
