Stocks finished the day in the green on Wednesday, though off their intraday highs.


The Dow finished the day up by 89.64. The Nasdaq Composite closed higher by 20.49. And the S&P 500 ended the day ahead 10.15.

Up more than 9% at the open, shares of Ikon Office Solutions Inc. ( IKN | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) rallied on news that the office equipment distributor was being acquired by Ricoh of Japan for $1.62 billion.


Losses that were not as bad as feared stoked buying in shares of Borders Group Inc. ( BGP | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), which were higher by more than 21% on Wednesday.


Del Monte ( DLM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) reports earnings Thursday morning before the bell. Analysts are expecting a loss of $0.04 per share.


Shares of Amylin Pharmaceuticals ( AMLN | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) fell by more than 24% after reports that four more patients died while taking company's diabetes treatment.


Better than expected earnings guidance for 2008 sent shares of Talbots ( TLB | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) soaring by more than 28% on Wednesday.


Oil stocks were among the day's big gainers, with stocks such as Tesoro Corporation ( TSO | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) up more than 11%.


Dell Inc. ( DELL | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) reports second quarter earnings Thursday after the market closes. Analysts are expecting EPS of $0.36.
