EDITORIAL: Helping those who serve: Even though Americans have not been asked to cut down on the amount of meat, pork or wheat p
Do you know when to trade BUSRF ?
There are several remarkable organizations in the Duluth area that focus their services on helping veterans, current military members and their families. There's the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans, recently recognized by Gov. Pawlenty. Another group doing a great job is the Family Readiness Group at the 148th Fighter Wing, Minnesota Air National Guard. There's the Blue Star Mothers (see Page 1) and the Family Assistance Center.
We are grateful to all those organizations.
But it's not enough.
Even though Americans have not been asked to cut down on the amount of meat, pork or wheat products we eat so the government can send more food to war zones, there are many measures we can take to support the troops.
We can help the family members who struggle -- to make ends meet or to shovel the nasty combination of ice and snow that keeps carpeting the Northland -- while their loved one is away.
If you want to help but don't know any military families, call the Family Assistance Center at 723-4852. The FAC is set up to help families and servicemen and aEUR"women find the resources they need here at home. Whether that means counseling, a helping hand with the yard work or a gas card to get them through to payday, the folks who work with the FAC will do their best to hook them up. (Note: Gas or grocery cards can be mailed to the Family Assistance Center at 4015 Airpark Boulevard, Duluth, MN 55811.)
We must also insist that our government -- state and national -- make sure that medical care for both physical and mental ailments is topnotch.
And we can simply say "thank you," when we
see men and women in uniform, or we learn that someone has served.
"What I do is just say 'Thank you for serving,'" said Blue Star Mother
Sara Lund.
It makes a difference, and it's the least we can do.
