China Equipment Maker Said to Research VoIP 3G Data Card

A leading telecom equipment manufacturer in China is rumored to start research and development of a 3G data card with the voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) function.
If true, it means that domestic telecom carriers, which consider VoIP as a possible threat to their own voice services, cannot block technology evolution rush and may launch Internet-based call business.
It also offers a new opportunity, namely a huge VoIP terminal market based on 3G networks, for Chinese telecom equipment manufacturers.
China Mobile Ltd. (SEHK: 0941 and NYSE: CHL), which is actively seeking new data products, is guessed to open the VoIP door first. However, persons from the telecom carrier gave no clear answers.
Persons from China Unicom (Hong Kong) Limited (NYSE: CHU, SEHK: 0762 and SHSE: 600050) said that revenues in future will mainly come from value-added services and data business. In fact, Apple iPhone mobile phones are able to support the VoIP function, which will not cause big influences on China Unicom, added the sources.
