Pfizer Inc.'s antidepressant Zoloft is among the drugs implicated in breastfeeding difficulties some women have after giving birth.
A study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism says several major antidepressants, including GlaxoSmithKline's Paxil and Eli Lilly & Co.'s Prozac, may cause delayed lactation. The study concluded that women on these antidepressants saw lactation delays of nearly 17 hours.
Women on antidepressants may need additional help to start the breastfeeding process, the journal added.
New mothers on these drugs are "at greater risk of a delay in the establishment of a full milk supply," one researcher said.
