When Sands Casino Resort officials make their pitch tomorrow to add table games to their casino, there may be little question that they'll get approval from the state Gaming Control board.

Yet, perhaps no other casino has more riding on the success of its poker, roulette and craps tables than the Sands, where Las Vegas Sands executives have said that finishing the mall and events center it halted in Nov. of 2008 may depend on how well tables games do in Bethlehem.

"It's going to drive hundreds of new jobs, it's going to make this a full service casino and it's going to ultimately lead to the build out of this site,," said Mayor John Callahan. "It's doesn't get much bigger than that."

Sands' application calls for 89 table games that would help create nearly 400 jobs.

The gaming board is expected to approve Sands' application at its March 16, or April 7 meeting and tables could be up and running in Bethlehem as early as July.

"There a lot of work to do, and there is the matter of each applicant paying the $16.5 million license fee before they can start tables games," said Gaming Control Board spokesman Doug Harbach. "A date has not been set, but the time fimeframe we are looking at for the first tables games is sometime between July and September."

Nine peopleare scheduled to testify during the hearing, which begins at 10 a.m. in Bethlehem's Town Hall.

Though not signed up to testify, the Eastern Pennsylvania Citizens Against Gambling has filed formal objections to table games being added to casinos at Sands and Parx casinos, in Bensalem.
