Pacific Crossing upgrades capacity and enhances ethernet service offering

Pacific Crossing, an NTT Communications company and operator of the trans-Pacific submarine cable system PC-1, has upgraded the capacity and enhanced its ethernet service offering on its infrastructure.
The newly added capacity will come into service at the end of July 2010. A third upgrade of the PC-1 system is scheduled for later in 2010.
Pacific Crossing has added additional wavelengths to enhance trans-Pacific capacity to more than 1.3Tbps. The upgrade has been implemented on the existing PC-1 infrastructure, the company said.
As a part of this upgrade, Pacific Crossing will add 10G LAN PHY services to its existing portfolio of 10G WAN PHY and Synchronous Optical Networking and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy services. Through the network topology of the PC-1 cable system, Pacific Crossing delivers the lowest latency for network services across the Pacific, a key factor for time sensitive applications and the financial industry in particular, the company said.
Mark Simpson, CEO of Pacific Crossing, said: "This upgrade is essential for Pacific Crossing to meet the growth in demand for our trans-Pacific portfolio of services. We expect to initiate a further substantial upgrade on PC-1 later in 2010 in recognition of continuing demand."
